Staff Metallurgist;

SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Hurst Metallurgical Research Laboratory, Inc. has an immediate need for a full-time, long-term Staff Metallurgist to conduct failure analyses and metallurgical evaluations.

Hurst Metallurgical Research Laboratory, Inc. is a small, highly-respected metallurgical research, testing and consulting firm, providing services to the aircraft, petrochemical, pressure vessel, transportation, and construction industries. The laboratory operates in a positive atmosphere and develops a person’s potential according to their willingness to learn and work hard to accomplish all assigned tasks. The laboratory is conveniently located between Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Conducting failure analyses, including interpretation of microstructures involving carbon and alloy steels, stainless steels, copper alloys, aluminum alloys, and super alloys in wrought, welded, cast or forged conditions.
• Communicating with customers concerning project requirements and then applying available information in problem solving.
• Preparing and etching of metallurgical cross-sections to allow for interpretation of the microstructures of carbon steels, alloy steels, coppers and brasses, and super alloys in wrought, cast, or forged conditions.
• Preparing and etching of cross-sections from welded and brazed samples to determine the conformance and soundness of the weld, as well as measuring such features as the weld size, leg length, effective or actual throat depth, size of the heat-affected zone, depth of penetration/fusion, and percent porosity of the filler metal.
• Performing Knoop and Vickers microhardness tests to determine the hardness variations within various zones of weldments, heat-affected areas, or segregated microstructures, and hardness surveys to determine the case depth of carburized and nitrided surfaces.
• Conducting research of theoretical or published data, applying the research to a specific problem, and then formulating a plausible resolution to the problem.
• Analyzing of test results to verify compliance to applicable standards such as ASME, AWS, API, ASTM and AMS.
• Preparing solution-oriented, high quality technical reports based on the client’s objective of testing and evaluation.


MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor of Science degree in materials science or metallurgical engineering, and 3+ years of hands-on experience in a commercial or captive metallurgical laboratory.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
• Excellent problem solving skills.
• Ability to think critically and analytically.
• Excellent communication and proofreading skills. Strong and effective technical writing skills are a must.
• Experience with the use of various metallurgical test equipment, such as spectrographs, metallographic grinder/polishers, Rockwell and microhardness testers, and microscopes.
• Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite and Corel WordPerfect Office.
• Intelligent, willing and eager to learn.
• Able to work several projects at once over a broad range of topics.
• Must demonstrate a strong interest in the metallurgical testing field.

QUALITY MANAGER/TECHNICAL WRITER -

Hurst Metallurgical Research Laboratory, Inc. has an immediate need for a full-time, long-term Quality Manager/Technical Writer to manage the overall ISO 17025 Standard quality program and formulate quality documents as well as write or edit technical reports from metallurgical test data.

The laboratory is conveniently located between Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Provide ongoing support and maintain all aspects of quality management of the Laboratory in accordance with ISO 17025 and the test specific NADCAP requirements.
• Investigate and obtain NADCAP accreditation for the Laboratory following guidelines provided by Performance Review Institute (PRI).
• Review and edit technical reports written by engineers in the field of metallurgical engineering for clients in various sectors, such as oil & gas, aerospace, construction, metal fabrication, insurance and litigation.


MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

• Degree in Engineering, Science, or in English or Journalism with Science background.
• Hands-on experience as a quality manager in an ISO 17025 accredited commercial or captive metallurgical laboratory for 3+ years with extensive experience in maintenance of NADCAP accreditation.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

• Solid skills and knowledge in management of ISO 17025 for a metallurgical laboratory.
• Ability to think critically, analytically, and methodically.
• Excellent writing skills in explanatory and procedural styles with strong attention to details and superior verbal communication skills.
• Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite and Corel WordPerfect Office.
• Working knowledge of standards and specifications, such as ASTM, ASME, AWS, API, SAE, and AMS, related to metallurgical testing and analysis is highly desirable.

WELDING/MECHANICAL TEST TECHNICIAN -

SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Hurst Metallurgical Research Laboratory, Inc. has an immediate need for a full-time Welding/Mechanical Test Technician. The laboratory operates in a positive atmosphere and develops a person’s potential according to their willingness to learn and work hard to accomplish all assigned tasks.

Hurst Metallurgical Research Laboratory, Inc. is a small, highly-respected metallurgical research, testing and consulting firm, providing services to the aircraft, petrochemical, pressure vessel, transportation, and construction industries.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:


• Communication with customers concerning project requirements and job status, and establish test requirements and fee estimates based on the specified standard or specification.
• Receiving and documentation of incoming test specimens.
• Verification of test equipment and instruments to ensure that they function properly and are in calibration prior to performing any tests.
• Welding Inspection and Weld Qualification Testing.
• Mechanical testing and inspection using all mechanical testing equipment such as tensile machine, Charpy impact tester, welding gauges, scales, calipers and micrometers.
• Rockwell hardness and Knoop/Vickers microhardness Testing.
• Analysis of test results to verify compliance to the applicable standards such as ASME, AWS, API, ASTM and AMS, and preparation of reports.ers in the field of metallurgical engineering for clients in various sectors, such as oil & gas, aerospace, construction, metal fabrication, insurance and litigation.


MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

An Associate of Science degree in welding technology, engineering technology or another science related field or high school diploma with 2+ years of experience in mechanical testing.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

• Well organized and acute attention to detail to provide accurate test results and error-free reports.
• Able to read and interpret technical documents such as blueprints, testing standards and specifications.
• Able to write test reports and correspondence.
• Able to perform basic arithmetic functions.
• Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Welding skills and CWI are highly desirable.
